Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg, Austria

Dating back to the 11th century, Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses in Europe. Throughout its life, Hohensalzburg has been a fort, a military barracks, a prison, and home to the prince archbishops. Now it houses several museums and has the look and feel of a medieval village within its protective walls.

We took the funicular to the top of Festungberg Hill and enjoyed exploring the fortress and a few of the museums. The views from the various lookouts were simply breathtaking, showcasing the winding Salzach River, the majestic mountains in the background, and sweeping vistas of the old town and surrounding areas.

Salzburg got his name because of the salt mines around the city. In past, Salzburg lived at the expense of salt extraction. In German “Salz” means “salt” and “Burg” castle.
