Christchurch experienced a 7.1 earthquake in September 2010 followed by a 6.3 earthquake in February 2011. The second earthquake brought down many buildings that were damaged from the previous earthquake. It hit the center of the city quite hard  and more than half of the buildings have since been demolished. The earthquakes damaged or destroyed thousands of homes. You can still see the destruction today. As we tour the city we notice brand new buildings as well as buildings that are fenced off and waiting for demolition or those that are in a state of repair. There were 185 people killed in the 2nd earthquake and thousands injured. Christchurch is a city that is still recovering from a devastating event.
