Avignon, France

This was our second visit to Avignon. It was one of the most important cities in Europe during the 14th century when the Pope moved from Rome to Avignon. Apparently there was much chaos in Rome and 6 Popes made the homes here before eventually moving the headquarters back to Rome. It’s most famously known as the “City of Popes”. The Palais des Papes (Popes Palace) is the largest surviving Gothic palace in Europe.

The city is still largely encircled by impressive 14th-century medieval ramparts, stretching for almost three miles and featuring 39 towers. As we walked along the bridge and looked back at the city it almost looked like something in a fairy tale.
