Avignon, France

We only had one day in Avignon, but we made use of it. We started by going to the Palace of the Popes. It is the largest Gothic palace in the world. Avignon was one of the most important cities in Europe during the 14th century when the Pope moved from Rome to Avignon. Apparently there was much chaos in Rome and 6 Popes made the homes here before eventually moving the headquarters back to Rome. The city has the best outer wall, still standing, that we have seen in France. The city also has many fountains, some of which are not in use currently, but most were functioning. As always, there were ancient churches and a grand clock tower. Some of the streets were so narrow Toby could almost span them with his arms. Some of the cobble stone streets were very rough but most were pretty good.
