Avila, Spain

We took the train to Avila and really enjoyed our day there. The city was founded in the 11th century and is the birthplace of St. Teresa. It is surrounded by walls comprised of 8 monumental gates, 88 watchtowers and more than 2,500 turrets. Much of the wall around the city is walkable and is said to be the best preserved and most complete in Spain. It claims to have the highest number of Romanesque and Gothic churches per capita in Spain.
