On August 6, 1945, the world was irrevocably changed with the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. At 8:15 a.m. local time, the bomb, nicknamed “Little Boy,” was released. The city was instantly devastated. Buildings within a one-mile radius of the hypocenter were obliterated. The intense heat sparked a firestorm that engulfed a large portion of the city.

The atomic bomb’s impact on the people of Hiroshima was horrific. Tens of thousands were killed instantly. Many others suffered severe burns, injuries from collapsing structures, and the invisible, insidious effects of radiation By the end of 1945, it is estimated that as many as 140,000 people had died as a result of the bombing.
