Mirogoj Cemetery is said to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. It is not only the resting place of thousands of Croatians, it is like an “open air” museum. It was built in 1876 to replace all of the smaller cemeteries throughout the city. All of the beautiful buildings are closed due to damage from the earthquake and many gravestones have been damaged.
