Today we toured the Wurzburg Residence which is a beautiful Palace with more than 300 rooms and dates back to the early 1700’s. There is a Fresco which was painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo which took only 14 months to complete in 1753. It is the world’s largest continuous ceiling fresco  and depicts the four then-known continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, and America), with allegorical figures and exotic animals, glorifying the prince-bishops. This fresco miraculously survived the WWII bombing largely intact. The Residence was almost completely gutted by fire. Wooden ceilings, floors, furnishings, and wall paneling were devoured by the flames. It has taken decades to rebuild the residence and the goal was to restore the palace to its original splendor as accurately as possible.
