York, England
We enjoyed our visit to York. It is a small city and easy to walk and see all that there is to see. The area called the Shambles has many shops and restaurants along narrow cobblestone streets.
York is a walled city that was founded by the Romans in 71 AD. We walked along some of the ancient walls and they are in very good condition. It’s one of the only cities in the UK that still has a standing wall with the original gateways to enter the ancient center.
We also saw the York Minister Cathedral which is hard to miss from almost anywhere in York. It is one of the largest cathedrals in the world, and took 250 years to build. We also visited the St. Mary’s Abbey and gardens. The Abbey was established in 1088 as a Benedictine Monastery and all that remains today are ruins.
